The following are statements made by our patients in their own words with respect to their experiences with Vision Therapy. Vision Therapy has proven helpful for children and adults who have come to us for various reasons: for help with learning difficulties, to enhance sports performance, or for help after suffering traumatic brain injury.
After undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumor, I was left with single-sided deafness, vestibular challenges, mild nerve damage and vision problems. I struggled to do many tasks and activities we all take for granted -- especially reading! My vestibular therapist wisely recommended vision therapy. Due to the patience and compassion of Helen (Welsh), Dr. Kim and the entire staff at Family Vision Care, I was able to improve tracking, strengthen my vision, and to reduce eye strain.
I am now able to read my students' essays, correct papers in less time, and to work on the computer. I am most delighted to be able to read books for enjoyment. (Before vision therapy, I was unable to read more than a chapter or two before developing severe eyestrain!) I am very thankful to all who helped me to succeed!

Lynn G., 49 year-old teacher
I enjoyed vision therapy. I learned to help my eyes.
Cybele benefited greatly from vision therapy. I was amazed at the improvement. She now enjoys reading which was a struggle before. She also enjoys writing and schoolwork is no longer a struggle either. Fantastic!
I was the girl in class who dreaded reading out loud -- yuck! It was a time for pure humiliation! Vision therapy has helped me actually enjoy reading out loud! I have worked on my weaknesses through special exercises and my eyes are a lot stronger and my reading comprehension is now higher! Vision therapy has really helped me in all parts of my school work -- note taking, homework, and in-class projects!
I am now 48 years old. When I was a teenager my left eye turned out when I became tired. I have not been able to use both eyes together very much, if at all, for many years. I find it totally amazing that my eyes and mind could be trained to work together after all of this time! Vision Therapy does work!
I would like to express my deep appreciation to my Therapist (Helen Welsh), and my Doctor (Doctor Oh), and all of the great people working with them at Hong & Stasko Optometry!
Before vision therapy, I had problems with reading. Through vision therapy I now can read very well and I understand what I'm reading. Now I c an sound the workds out instead of guessing. Before, homework took hours a night. Now it takes only 1 hour and 30 minutes. I also don't have headaches at the end of every day. All in all, vision therapy truly is serious fun!
When I first started Vision Therapy I was horrible at spelling, always saw double, couldn't see anything around what I was looking at and didn't have much fun in school. Now my B- turns to an A. I almost never see double. I can see everything clearly and can't wait to go to school after a weekend. I would recommend VT to anybody who thinks it could help. Vision Therapy is really serious fun!
My Vision Therapy Success Story
I am recovering from chronic carbon monoxide poisoning. Among the myriad of health issues as a result of the poison, it caused neurological injury including neuro-optical impairment. I was experiencing increased difficulty in reading and my ability to use a computer was limited to about 15 (stressful) minutes a day. I also had lost almost all of my peripheral vision. Just walking down the street was disorienting and driving was completely out of the question. My vision problems were a major contributor to my inability to work.
A Neuro-Psychologist in Southern California had recommended vision therapy but I was unable to find a doctor in the Bay Area who seemed to know anything about it -- until I contacted Family Vision Care and Vision Therapy. In my very first phone call to the office, I was greeted with warmth and caring. A far cry from what I had experienced in my recent quest to find an optometrist.
Dr. Kristina Stasko examined me, made a diagnosis that confirmed my complaints were real, and explained they were consistent with acquired brain injuries. (An optometrist in Los Angeles had recently told me the was absolutely nothing wrong with my vision.) Dr. Stasko reassured me she could help me with a combination of reading glasses and vision therapy. The glasses immediately assisted my eye teaming, improving my ability to read.
I underwent 20 weeks of vision therapy under the expert care of Tom. I am continuing therapy with home maintenance and once monthly office visits for an additional four months. Tom is a friendly, patient, and encouraging therapist with a unique ability to make the therapy feel almost fun. Most importantly, I could see (no pun intended) an improvement almost immediately. The therapy has restored my ability to read, I have command of my peripheral vision again and I am equipped with relaxation exercises so as not to overstress my eyes. The therapy has also helped to improve some of my cognitive processes and short-term memory, both impaired by the injury.
Family Vision Care and Vision Therapy gave me a huge part of my life back. I quite simply works.
