NEW! 1-DAY ACUVUE® and Focus Dailies
One day disposable contact lenses are the most exciting development to occur in soft lenses in the last few years. Recent studies have shown that the newer one day contact lenses are the safest soft contact lens offered. It is the simplest soft contact lens solution - wear for one day and throw them away. This is the best modality for patients who are sensitive to solutions, wear lenses only for special activities such as sports, have a history of contact lens infections or anyone that wants the healthiest soft contact lenses. Wearing one day lenses cuts out the average cost of $130 a year spent on cleaning supplies for soft contact lenses.
Soft Toric Contact Lenses
Another very exciting development in soft contact lenses has been the toric lens. This lens allows for the correction of almost all types of astigmatism. Until recently, this lens was only offered in a daily wear lens, a lens that is not replaced for 6 months to a year. Now many patients who require this type of lens have the option of wearing a frequent replacement lens (replaced monthly or quarterly) or a two week disposable lens. Ciba Vision will be introducing a one day disposable soft toric lens.
Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses (RGP's)
RGP's are one of the healthiest contact lenses available because they allow for the passage of oxygen and carbon dioxide through the contact lens, hence the term gas permeable. RGP's are custom made for each eye and have the added benefits of lasting sometimes 2-3 years and providing the clearest vision possible. They are also the lens of choice to prevent one’s prescription from increasing or eliminate nearsightedness or myopia. If you are interested in eliminating nearsightedness or myopia, please ask one of our doctors if you might be a candidate for Corneal Refractive Therapy, an alternative to Lasik surgery.
Bifocal Contact Lenses
Most patients over 40 cannot wear contact lenses that only correct for their distance acuity without needing to wear reading glasses over their contacts to see up close. For these patients, bifocal contacts may be the answer. Bifocal contacts come in many modalities such as 2-week disposable, RPG's, Progressives and Dailies. "Mono" vision, the use of one eye for distance and the other for near is the right solution for many patients.
Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT)
CRTs is a terrific alternative for those people who experience some discomfort in the daily wearing of contacts or who are active in sports. CRTs are lenses worn while you sleep, shaping your eyes so that you do not need to wear corrective lenses while awake. Follow this link to learn more about Corneal Refractive Therapy.
Contact Lens Solutions
There are many contact lens solutions on the market that you can buy at any drugstore or supermarket. However, some solutions are better for patients sensitive to certain surfactants (soaps), some are better for different types of contact lenses and others are important for patients who tend to develop heavy deposits on their lenses. Talk to your doctor about which solutions are right for you.
There are many types of contacts out there. Our doctors have vast experience determining which contacts are right for you.
